A ‘wonderfully empowering’ Swansea-based mental health support group is helping to inspire people with doubts about their abilities to become trainers and mentors for others with the same problems.

Transcend is a unique project with a ‘genuinely peer support model’ helping people with mental health issues either as a mentee – requiring support – or a mentor, providing it.

‘Transcend recognises mental health recovery as a process which the community and not just the professionals can support,’ said nominator Julia Manser, Swansea Council for Voluntary Service, Volunteer Centre and Engagement Gateway Project Worker.

The volunteer mentors undertake in-depth training. Often they are out of work and due to their mental ill health may have gaps in their employment history. The project provides certification and experience.

‘The project has smashed its required targets yet continues to offer training to the community to reduce stigma and improve knowledge, train volunteers to assist the community response and take additional names for future mentoring,’ Julia Manser added.

‘Transcend is a wonderfully empowering experience, training and volunteering project. This group of mentors display everything that that is wonderful about volunteers.’

Transcend Project Coordinator Jaymie Huckridge said the initiative was developed by the Swansea Mental Health Forum as a partnership with SCVS and was a ‘brilliant’ example of how volunteers could respond to community support needs in a unique way.

‘The experience, dedication and passion of the peer mentors has been the driving force behind the project’s success, and this award is a wonderful acknowledgement of their hard work,’ he added.

‘The project’s success has been overwhelming, and Transcend would like to thank the Big Lottery for funding us and enabling us to make such a big difference to Swansea.’
