Children of prisoners have about three times the risk of developing mental health problems compared to their peer and experience higher levels of social disadvantage.

In addition, maintaining links between prisoners and their families plays an important role in supporting rehabilitation and reducing re offending, with those prisoners who are visited in prison by a partner or family member having a significantly lower re offending rate than those who are not.
